Operas

Each season Commonwealth Opera mounts a fully staged or semi-staged opera in one of the comfortable public performance theaters and halls in Northampton or at the University of Massachusetts Fine Arts Center.

We bring you some of the grandest opera of all time—in living color and outstanding theatrical sound, with an auditioned cast and chorus, full orchestra, stage sets, costumes, and lighting. We have staged dozens of traditional favorites including Puccini’s Turandot, Gounod’s Faust, Humperdinck’s Hansel & Gretel, Bellini’s Norma, and Bizet’s Carmen, as well as 20th-Century masterpieces including Menotti’s Amahl and the Night Visitors and Carlisle Floyd’s Susannah (see our repertoire).

We have garnered advance media attention for all our shows and area media critics have given rave reviews of our productions.

Opera is for adults, college students, youth—and the entire family. We welcome those who are new to opera, experiencing it for the very first time.
