Messiah

The real star of the sing-along is the audience, which is encouraged to sing selected choruses from the world’s most popular oratorio. . . . It is not an exercise in sight-singing, but rather simply the joy of singing familiar, well-loved music . . .

—The Republican

Hurry. We have to get to St. John’s early, or we won’t get a seat . . .

MESSIAH SING-ALONG

Handel's Messiah, sing-along style
Northampton, Mass.

All welcome, whether or not you sing!

Each year at winter holiday time, to celebrate the artistic glory of the season Commonwealth Opera gives a resounding musical free gift to our communities.

Instituted by founding artistic director emeritus Richard R. Rescia, the Messiah Sing-Along, held at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Northampton, is a major public event featuring four professional soloists accompanied by the Commonwealth Opera Chamber Orchestra led by a guest conductor.

Community string players are always welcome to join the orchestra. Many participants bring their own score—some scores are available to borrow or purchase the evening of the event.

Each year the Messiah Sing packs the church at the edge of the Smith College campus to overflowing. If you mark the event on your calendar, remind yourself to get there early for a seat!

Free admission; free-will offering to Commonwealth Opera. Please bring nonperishable food items for the Northampton Survival Center. Make the glorious, soaring music of Handel’s Messiah a part of your annual holiday tradition!
