Meet Commonwealth Opera’s Artistic Director
RON LUCHSINGER (production director/designer), beginning his second season as permanent artistic director of Commonwealth Opera, directed last season’s highly praised productions of Puccini’s La boheme and Jacques Brel Is Alive and Well and Living in Paris. His earlier associations with the company featured productions of Menotti’s The Medium in 1978, Hansel and Gretel in 1983 and The Barber of Seville in 2005 . Ron has directed a wide range of productions for such companies as Connecticut Opera, Eugene Opera, Anchorage Opera, the OK Mozart Festival, and the State University of New York (SUNY) at Stony Brook. Ron was artistic director of the Simsbury Light Opera for 19 seasons and has been Visiting Artistic Director of Opera at the University of Connecticut. He has served on the faculties of the Hartt School, Mannes College of Music, the New York Opera/Drama Studio, and the California Music Center. He continues his longtime association with Opera North in Lebanon, N.H. as Director of Productions, where last season he directed productions of Verdi’s Falstaff and Puccini’s Turandot, which Opera On Line called “Best Summer Opera Production” in the Northeast, naming Luchsinger “Best Director.” This February he directs Offenbach’s Orpheus in the Underworld for the Hartt School. He returns to Opera North next summer for his twentieth season, directing Madame Butterfly and The Magic Flute. Luchsinger has staged over 100 operas and musical theatre works.
